Team responsibilities

The employees of the Protocol and city twinning team organise protocol events, representative responsibilities of the Lord Mayor and oversees foreign relations and city twinning.

Among other things, the team is responsible for outstanding events such as the Lord Mayor’s New Years Reception, the Athletic Awards Ceremony of the State Capital Magdeburg, the Town Hall Festival, for honouring citizens and special birthday and wedding anniversaries. His responsibilities also include wreath-laying ceremonies and memorial services.
Honours according to the Statutes for Honorary Citizens are always highlights among the day-to-day tasks. Recognising Honorary Citizens, recipients of Honorary Rings, Honorary Ambassadors, Honorary City Councillors and the presentation of the City plaque on company anniversaries are important social recognitions, in which the City expresses its highest esteem for the recipients.

In recognition of outstanding personalities, the entries in the Golden Book and the Guest Book of the State Capital Magdeburg are prepared.

Twinned cities

One of the main responsibilities of the Twinned cities department is maintaining contact with the 7 twinned cities Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina), Braunschweig, Nashville (USA), Zaporizhia (Ukraine), Radom (Poland), Harbin (China) and Le Havre (France). In addition to this, it organises the ceremonies for the twinning anniversaries and receptions for guests from the twinned cities.
The established programmes and many projects in the arts, culture, music, sports and youth are supported, supervised and documented by this team. Individual visit programmes provide comprehensive support for official delegations of the twinned cities and sensitise them for new aspects of the cooperation.

Arranging contacts and bringing together potential cooperation partners for twinning work are part of the diverse range of activities.
