The "Abtshof Bunte Circuswelt” in the Buckau district of the German city of Magdeburg was opened in August 2009. The old entrepreneur’s mansion owned by the machine factory run by Rudolf Wolf and located on the site of the company Abtshof GmbH is now home to Magdeburg’s first circus museum.
The colourful circus world boasts an exhibition area covering around 600m2 and featuring a diverse range of exhibits from the fields of animal training, artistry, clownery and variety theatre. Visitors to the museum, which is spread out over three floors, can marvel at models of several circus companies, original artists’ costumes, circus posters and programmes, photographs and books focusing on the world of circus performances.
The museum also offers visitors the chance to view and read the biographies of a number of famous artists, animal tamers, clowns and magicians. The opening of the Magdeburg Circus Museum played an important role in preserving the cultural history of the colourful circus world.
The museum was initiated by Gerhard Mette, the Managing Director of the company Abtshof GmbH and the Chairman of the “Circusfreunde” (Friends of the Circus) association in Magdeburg.
